Daily Encouragement: Psalm 119:17 Notes

Deal Bountifully with Thy servant that I may live and keep your Word. Psalm 119:17

Notes on Psalm 119:17:

“Deal Bountifully” refers to a reward, benefit. Or bestow on.With this thought, The Author wants God to benefit his life. This, in a nutshell, the meaning of  the phrase “Deal Bountifully.”

“Servant” means 100% devotion to someone and be obedient to the master. Servant (Str. 5680) in the Hebraic culture referred to bondage. So, the Author is bonded to the God of the universe. The Author wants God to bestow greatness to him because the Author wants to live and keep God’s Word.

“Thy” is an old English word that is used to convey the uniqueness of God.

“That” is a division word between the phrases “Deal Bountifully with Thy servant” and “I may live and keep your Word.” “that” in modern translation would refer to “so that.” To paraphrase, “God please deal bountifully with me, so that I might live and keep your Word.”

“live” How does one live? “Live” (Str. 2421) means “preserve, restore, revive, save, be whole.” To paraphrase again, “God please deal wonderfully with me, so that I might be whole again and keep your Word. “

“Keep” how does one keep God’s Word? By listening and becoming a Servant of God. God reveals how we should keep his Word in his special revelation which is the Word of God. When the author seeks after God through reading His testimonies, he will know how to live a better life. Keeping God’s Word and being whole go hand and hand.

To Summarize Verse 17, The author, who is a bondservant of God, is urging God to deal bountifully with him so that he might be restored and keep God’s Word.
