The Sword of the Spirit: Fighting for What is Right
In the Christian life, there is a spiritual fight between you and the Devil. To win this battle and defeat Satan’s nasty minions, God gives us an awe-inspiring tool called the "Sword of the Spirit". While a real sword is a metal weapon used for attacking or defending, the Sword of the Spirit is actually the Word of God found in the Bible. It is a powerful offensive mechanism that stops the Devil's attacks by judging our thoughts and our attitudes.
Jesus and the Desert Test
In Matthew 4, we learned how to apply the Sword of the Spirit. The best way to learn how to use this sword is to look at Jesus. After Jesus went forty days without food, He was very hungry. The Devil tried to trick Him in three big ways:
Physical Desires: Satan told Jesus to turn stones into bread. Jesus used the "sword" of scripture to say that people need God's Word even more than food.
Possessions and Power: Satan offered Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus would worship him. Jesus fought back with the Bible, saying we must only worship and serve God.
Pride: The Devil told Jesus to jump off a high building to prove God would save Him. Jesus answered with scripture again, saying we should not put God to the test.
Because Jesus used God’s Word as His weaponry, the Devil had to leave Him alone.
Using Your Sword Every Day
Even 2nd- and 3rd-graders face the same kinds of tests today. You might feel "physical desires" when you want to play video games instead of doing what is right. You might struggle with "power" by being selfish and not sharing toys, or by not respecting your parents and teachers. You might even struggle with "pride" when you think you are better than others or refuse to say "I’m sorry".
The Bible says we should "sanctify" God’s Word, which means to set it apart as the truth in our lives. When you have a problem, you should go to the Bible. By reading the Bible and memorizing verses, you can keep your heart's attitude right and stay strong against the Devil. Always remember to "take the sword of the Spirit," because God’s Word is living, active, and sharper than any metal blade. We do not live on the physical desires of this world, but we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
