Psalms 88 is one of the saddest psalm to the breathless Society. The Breathless Society believes that “Darkness is their closest companion.” This Psalm was written by Heman, the Ezrahite.
Do you feel like your life is spiritual darkness, unable to see the light of day? Our life is a constant battle in the mind. Our life is not easy as a Christian. We constantly battle against Satan. We combat our innermost thought that “Darkness is my closest friend.” A Breathless society has a mantra today that states “Darkness is their closest friend.” Do we live in the realm of darkness, suffocating our desire to pursue Christ? Are we praying for a revival? Is your name written in the precious book of life? Now, the question is How do we not live like the breathless society? To analyze this, we will need to look at the eight questions found in Psalms 88. 1) Are your wonderful deeds of any use to the dead? 2) Do the dead rise up and praise God? 3) Can those in the grave declare your unfailing love? 4) Can they proclaim your faithfulness in the place of destruction. 5) Can the darkness speak of your wonderful deeds? 6) Can anyone in the land of forgetfulness talk about your righteousness? Then the last two questions are personal to the author. 7) O Lord, why do you reject me? 8) Why do you turn your face from me?
How often do we feel like God reject us? How often do we feel alone? How often do we struggle with the concept of Shame? How do we overcome shame? How can we forgive ourselves? How often do we feel unworthy to pursue ministry? How do we overcome these thoughts?
Psalms 88 is a song of lament. Heman feels like darkness is his closest friend even though he cried out to God. He feels like there is no escape and he is as good as dead. However, He believes that Salvation belongs to God. He will keep pleading to God. He will keep pleading to God. He, yet, still feel rejected by God. We are never rejected by God. He, Yahweh, are close to the brokenhearted and crushed in spirit. We do not live “in the land of forgetfulness.” We live in the land of plentiful.
Our way of escape is NOT self-harm. Our way of Escape IS belief in Jesus Christ. In Christ, we find a forgiving God. You can overcome your shame. No longer is darkness our closest friend. LIGHT will always overpower the darkness. We are not alone in our struggles. God has the power to renew our mind that we will not live in shame. He forgives us. He loves us so much. He calls us sons and daughters. All you have to do lay your burdens at the foot of the cross. The time is now. Put your faith in Jesus Christ.
